Pincushions!

Does anyone else have a pincushion that looks like mine?  It's just too stuffed and doesn't work properly! I'm always grabbing more than one pin or bent pins and my favorite tiny, vintage pins get lost in the sea. I guess every now and then one must perform a spring cleaning of the pincushion, eliminating bulk and what not, but I don't and certainly don't plan to!

After discovering this problem, I thought I could will myself to put the pins back in a less-saturated way. But oh no... we get in a rhythm while sewing and these pile ups just happen. Over and over I watch myself stick the pin in the same spot, like a small child decorating the Christmas tree!

Another complaint: the upholstrey weight fabric I used was  too thick to quickly stab a pin into, so many a pin tumbled to it's death, forever lost to the land of playful kittens, dust pans and unhappy feet.

All this to say that I decided to make a new pincushion and ended up with two extra! I put them in my ETSY shop and if you want one, go get it!!

Did I mention that they're hedgehogs?? Yeah, they're cute little hedgehogs...

Mandy & Myrtle

Mandy & Myrtle aren't spoken for...

If you buy one in my shop and write me a note that says something like... "I read your blog and want a hedgie!!" I'll refund your shipping! FRee Shipping if you mention my blog! Woo hoo! Bargin.

Hop to it kiddos!! Your hedgie awaits!

Sewing = My latest obsession.

I didn't do all that much of it in Brooklyn, because it seemed to take up too much space. Also, my sewing machine was a bit too heavy to keep dragging out all the time. In a perfect world, I'd have a room big enough to have the machine set up and ready to go at all times. Of course there would also be a gorgeous collection of threads on the wall to choose from, stacks of beautiful fabrics organized by color and magical 'infinity' bobbins that never need re-winding, but let's get real!  Most of the time, my fabric is a mess or I don't have enough for what I want to do. Plus, I usually give up on the pattern early and do my own thing, only to realize that the pattern contained some important information/steps I should probably have paid attention to. (This coming from the girl who writes patterns for a living, duh.) Needless to say, I have a lot of unfinished sewing projects in my possession. These sewing disasters are far less forgiving than my pile of knitting 'mistakes' which can easily be pulled out and re-knit. It's definitely important that I keep hangDesign it Yourself Clothes by Cal Patching on to them though, despite the fact that I will NEVER actually finish them.

Lately, the sewing bug has hit me. Perhaps because in Maine, I've been able to spread out. Or perhaps because I have a sewing machine here that can do more than just a straight stitch plus a mom who works at a bookstore and gets me awesome craft books and doesn't seem to mind me taking over the dinning room table for weeks on end...

It started with Design-it Yourself-Clothes by the wonderful designer/maker/teacher (and my friend)  Cal Patch.   As someone who has wanted to make her own clothes for like, forever, I was really excited to get this book. I started with the first project, a skirt, and have already learned so much about darts, seams, translating paper pattern to fabric, thinking three dimensionally and on and on. It's such a cute book. The photos are light, airy and inspirational. Her voice is encouraging, humorous and extremely approachable. With each turn of the page, I couldn't wait to get started.

One day I decided to make the little elephant from Last Minute Patchwork Gifts:

Then I got One Yard Wonders and launched into a holiday making frenzy!

I made the car caddy & the origami tray seen on the cover for my mom.  For my six year old pal, Eleanor, I made an apron that turns into a little bag!

But perhaps the BEST thing to happen in my sewing life... stumbling upon an unfinished project left by my Great Aunt Wilma: a very "late seventies" cloth quiet book. She had all the pieces cut out, labeled and organized in envelopes. The pages were ready to go and all I had to do was attach everything, which in my opinion, was the easier and more fun part. Thanks Wilma!! There were enough materials to make two books, so I gave one to Eleanor's sister Clarissa, who is the perfect age for it!! From what I hear, it was a hit!

How cool is this?

I pulled out an old package of seam binding tonight to make something and discovered the sweetest thing on the back of its label. You might have to enlarge to the photo to see it...

Basically the gist is that for three discarded wrappers and 15 cents they'll send a bag of clippings for your child. I think it's so rad that the company is willing to do that and advertise it! Wouldn't it be nice if that were the way today? I would so be all over that grab bag!! Maybe I should see if they still do it... hmmmmmm...

*update

When checking out the address above, I noticed it didn't have a zip code. I of course thought this made it very old, you know from before zip codes! Then I did research to find out that the United States started zip codes in 1963! So, the package is probably not that old. Although, 15 cents is a pretty small amount... any guesses out there. How old is this offer? Will it still stand? (Ha)

There's nothing like your friend's beautiful loft/shop/studio to make you want to move to Seattle...

My pals Isabelle & Nick are just amazing folk. They have converted a garage into this amazing home & studio for their growing business: Piano Nobile. Check out Isabelle's lovely bags in their Etsy store!

Kj and I had a lovely time chillin in the front "yard"with Bauhaus the puppy, some wine and some olives. We later went out for conveyor belt sushi and came back for strawberry rhubarb pie and a movie projected on the wall. Um, can you say best day ever?

New pillows 2!

At Kj's request I'm showing the before ugly- came-with-the-couch-pillow:

Then these are the finished pillows I made last night. The inspiration came from the combo of two things... that for a long time I've REALLY needed nice new pillows and that after dance rehearsal and brunch with friends I just felt like a quick jaunt across town to buy fabric.

Sometimes you just have to do a simple project. Something easy that you know you can finish in a short period of time, just to remind yourself that you still can. That you still know how to use that sewing machine and turn some flat rectangles of fabric into something infinitely cuter than what came with your couch and have been settling for over a year.

The seams are loose (thank you broken sewing machine) and nothings perfectly square, but the job is done and I am pleased.

New pillows!

Today, out of the blue , I decided I finally needed to recover the pillows on my couch! Here's the fabric that I got at Purl Patchwork :

The bottom one is a super beautiful brown/black stripe from a Japanese company. It's just gorgeous and modern but also reminds me of homespun you'd find in a country store. I managed to whip up four simple pillow covers before the Oscars were over, I'll post a photo tomorrow in daylight.

Warning you, they're pretty basic... my sewing skills are limited and I didn't have a rotary cutter, so I improvised my straight lines using the wooden floor boards as guides. I figured, close enough for me! I've always been a 'settler' when it comes to sewing anyway. If it's not my measurement and cutting, it's a wonky seam from the sewing machine and somethings bound to go awry! They should hold up for a bit I think.

Weekend Update

Great News!! I just found out I got picked for Poppytalk Handmade! Yeah! I was so excited I decided to revamp my ETSY store and make new stuff. People will be able to view my products at Poppytalk, but will be linked to my etsy store if they want to buy so... it's gotta look fab!

I spent all morning Saturday doing a little photoshoot, which I'll soon post on Flickr. I know this is my own stuff and all, but I'm just in love with how it all looks. I had such a nice morning being a stylist & photographer!

The thing I'm REALY excited about though are my new "Trousseaus." (Can I make that plural???) I've had this idea for a while to gather lace, buttons, sewing needles and notions and organize them into little collections by color. I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to debut them and I can't emphasize enough how much I love them!!! I'm not doing it alone either. My amazing mom, Toni (aka Zu Zu... ha ha I outed you mom!!!) has been scouring the Maine flea markets, yard sales and especially ebay to find me great treasures for you all! Thanks Mom!!!

Here's what my room looked like during the making!

And the end results:

They will be up on my etsy store soon!!!

I'll leave you with some recent thrift store finds

and some sneak peaks of my favorite photos of Saturday

What I made today

Well, yesterday, actually.

A "Bloomers" prototype. I will most likely use a more subtle fabric, but this is all I had enough of at the time. (I really need to update my fabric stash.) This sample is hastily sewn together but the real bloomers will be much nicer. Drawstring waist and elastics at the cuff. The photographed version doesn't have elastic yet.

Pizza!!! I love homemade pizza for all the reasons!!!

Nests

So smart, it's stupid!

As I was browsing the interweb this morning, I came across this awesome idea.

It might just be me, but I often am at a loss as to how to best sew on a four-holed button... like a box? Like an X?
Neither has ever satisfied me, but what more could I do?

Check it out:

How abouut a beautiful little flower? Why didn't I think of this?????

Needless to say, my buttons will look like this from now on!
