Do No More

Maine Moves VI | Portland, Maine | 2019

Do No More is an exploration of costumes and sound. I created layered skirts that we could remove, swish, and use to make sound in numerous ways. Our movement unearths a utilitarian symbolism of each skirt as they became wash rags, swaddled babies, waving flags, and clothes hanging on the line. I didn’t set out out make a piece about “womens work” yet somehow I did. By the end, my dancers and I collectively decided… we would do no more.

This dance uses both choreography and improvisation.

Dancers: Kimberly Hamlin, Erika Lindstom, and Joanna Patterson.

I can’t tell you how much I adore these women. My dance partners, artistic collaborators and long time friends: Emily Delamater, Magi Chapman Quinn, Joanna Patterson and Erin Hamlin. I began to write that we are greater than the sum of our parts, but quickly realized that old saying doesn’t really work for us. We are each strong in our individual pursuits, but as a group, we amplify each other into something even better.

We chose the name Bower ( a pleasant shady place under trees or climbing plants) based on what it feels like for us to be together. Like safety, and home. Like encompassing someone you love in a strong hug. Like holding space in that shady spot for ideas to bloom and grow without fear. Like roots and branches reaching… building.

We regularly collaborate on new work, with no on person ever in charge. We perform in group shows around Maine, and are currently working on a evening length performance called WARP + WEFT.
